A label can look excellent on screen and still fail the moment it reaches a cold room, a damp benchtop or a busy packing line. This guide to custom product labels focuses on the decisions that affect real-world performance: material, adhesive, finish, format and the information your customer needs to see.
For product businesses, labels do more than carry a logo. They identify stock, support compliance, communicate quality and help a product stand out on the shelf. Getting the specification right early avoids wasted labels, delayed packing and costly reprints.

Start with where the label will be used
The product environment should lead the label decision, not the artwork. A label for a dry retail carton has very different requirements from one for a chilled bottle, freezer pack, cosmetic jar or chemical container.
Consider the full journey of the product. Will it be refrigerated or frozen? Is condensation likely? Will it be handled with wet hands, exposed to oil, rubbed during transport or stored outdoors? Does the label need to survive only until point of sale, or remain readable for years?
Paper labels are a practical, cost-effective option for dry indoor products, cartons and many retail applications. They can provide a natural, premium feel for products such as wine, pantry goods and specialty packaging. The trade-off is that standard paper is not the right choice where water, refrigeration or frequent handling is involved.
Synthetic and vinyl labels are better suited to demanding conditions. They resist moisture, tearing and scuffing more effectively than paper, making them useful for bottles, jars, personal care products, cleaning products and industrial items. For outdoor graphics, equipment identification or long-life promotional use, self-adhesive vinyl is generally the more suitable option.
Choose the right adhesive, not just the right face stock
A waterproof face material does not automatically mean the label will stay in place. Adhesive selection matters just as much, particularly on cold, textured, curved or low-energy surfaces.
Standard permanent adhesive works well for many clean, dry packaging surfaces. It is a straightforward choice for regular product labels applied to glass, paperboard, many plastics and smooth containers. However, it may not perform as expected if labels are applied in a cold room, onto damp packaging or onto surfaces with dust, oil or silicone residue.
High-tack adhesive is designed for difficult surfaces and applications where extra grip is required. It can be a good fit for textured plastics, rough cartons, industrial containers and products that will be handled heavily. More adhesive is not always better, though. A high-tack label can be difficult to remove cleanly, which is unsuitable for reusable containers or temporary promotions.
For chilled and freezer products, use a label and adhesive rated for the relevant conditions. There is an important difference between a label that can remain in a freezer and one that can be applied directly to a frozen product. Application temperature, storage temperature and the presence of condensation all affect performance.
Removable adhesive has its place when labels must peel away without leaving residue, such as temporary price labels, promotional stickers or short-term stock identification. Always be clear about how long the label needs to remain applied. A removable label may become harder to remove after long exposure to heat, sunlight or certain surfaces.
Match the label format to your application process
The best label format depends on how labels are applied and how many products need to be packed. Labels on a roll are usually the most efficient option for regular production, whether they are applied by hand or through a labelling machine. Roll direction, core size and outer roll diameter can matter for machine application, so confirm these details before printing.
For lower-volume jobs, flat sheets or individually supplied labels may be more practical. Crack back labels are useful where staff need to peel labels quickly during manual packing. The split backing makes the label easier to release, which can save time across a short production run.
Shape also affects application. A rectangular label is generally easier to apply consistently than an intricate shape, especially on a production line. Custom shapes can look distinctive, but tight curves, narrow points and very small details may lift more easily or slow down application. If the container is curved, leave enough margin from the edge and avoid placing critical text close to a bend.
Build artwork for print, not just for the screen
Good label artwork is clear at the size it will be printed. A design that looks balanced on a large monitor can become crowded on a 50 mm jar label. Check the actual dimensions before approving a proof.
Keep key information away from the trim edge. Labels are cut with normal production tolerances, so small text, borders and barcodes need breathing room. A border placed too close to the edge can look uneven after trimming, even when the cut is within tolerance.
For reliable print results, supply high-resolution artwork with text converted to outlines where appropriate. Images should be suitable for print size rather than copied from a website or social media post. If your design runs to the edge of the label, include bleed so there is no unwanted white line after cutting.
Colour also needs practical expectations. Screen colours are made from light, while printed colours are made from inks or toner on a physical material. Paper texture, clear film, metallic stock and coloured containers can all influence the final appearance. If a brand colour is critical, discuss it before production rather than assuming a screen preview will be exact.
Make product information easy to find
A label has limited space, so hierarchy matters. Your brand and product name should be easy to recognise first. The next priority is usually the information that helps a customer make a decision, such as flavour, size, variant, use or key product benefit.
Compliance details must remain legible. Depending on the product category and market, this may include ingredients, allergens, warnings, batch details, storage instructions, barcode information, contact details or country-of-origin statements. Requirements vary by product, so confirm what applies to your business before going to print.
Avoid using very small reversed text, particularly white text on a dark background. It can lose clarity at small sizes or on textured materials. Barcodes need adequate contrast and a clear area around them so scanners can read them. If a barcode is essential to retail operations, test it from a printed sample before committing to a full run.
Select finishes that support the product
Finishes should improve performance or presentation, not add cost without a purpose. A gloss finish can make colours appear more vivid and provides a clean, polished look. Matte can feel more understated and is often easier to read under bright lighting. For premium food, beverage or gift products, textured papers and metallic materials can help create shelf appeal.
Clear labels can produce a no-label look on transparent containers, but they demand clean artwork and careful application. Any bubbles, wrinkles or adhesive gaps will be more noticeable than on an opaque white label. White ink or a white underprint may be needed behind coloured artwork on clear film, depending on the effect required.
For labels exposed to water, cleaning products, regular handling or outdoor conditions, prioritise durability over decorative effects. A practical synthetic or vinyl construction will usually deliver better value than a premium paper stock that needs replacing early.
Check these details before requesting a quote
A clear specification speeds up quoting and helps prevent assumptions. Before sending artwork, have the following details ready:
- Finished label width and height, plus shape if it is not rectangular.
- Quantity required and whether this is a one-off, short run or repeat order.
- Product surface, including whether it is glass, plastic, cardboard, metal, textured or curved.
- Storage and use conditions, such as refrigeration, freezer use, moisture, chemicals or outdoor exposure.
- Application method, including hand application or machine labelling.
- Required finish, roll direction and deadline.
It also helps to provide a photo or sample of the container. Two bottles may look similar but have different surface treatments, curves or application areas. That information makes material advice more accurate.
Test before scaling up
A small test can prevent a large problem. Apply sample labels to the actual product, then put them through normal conditions: refrigeration, transport, handling, moisture and any cleaning process. Check that corners stay down, print remains readable and the label applies at a workable speed.
This is especially worthwhile when changing containers, moving to a new product formulation or introducing a label into a cold environment. Even a proven material can perform differently when the packaging surface changes.
Short to medium print runs give businesses room to refine labels without being locked into excessive stock. Start with a specification that suits the product as it is now, then adjust as volumes, packaging and market requirements change. The right label is the one that looks on-brand, applies efficiently and stays put for the life of the product.
